Animal Hospital Of Cambridge Launch Veterinary Telemedicine Service

Pet owners can now access veterinary support through video and text-based chat from the comfort of home.

The Animal Hospital of Cambridge (AHOC), located in Cambridge, and Fifth Avenue Veterinary Clinic (FAVC), located in Orangeville, have launched a veterinary telemedicine platform to support pet owners amid the COVID-19 outbreak. This platform allows pet owners to connect with a member of AHOC’s professional veterinary team from the comfort of home, thereby eliminating any unnecessary travel in the event the veterinarian can treat the pet remotely.

“Any unnecessary travel puts undue stress on the pet, its owner, and our staff,” says Dr. Kathy Hrinivich, co-owner of AHOC and FAVC. “While we can’t conduct surgery or perform vaccines remotely, we can treat a variety of issues, concerns and questions through telemedicine, which supports the well-being of our entire community.”

AHOC and FAVC are currently providing this service to existing and new patients in the Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Orangeville and Greater Toronto Area regions, however geographic expansion is planned for the future. Clients can opt to connect via video or text-based chat. The service is currently being offered from 8am until 8pm, 7 days per week.

The launch of the service couldn’t come at a better time. In addition to eliminating unnecessary travel, the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) recently approved the utilization of telemedicine for a broad variety of functions, including diagnosis and prescription of medication, when appropriate.

“Since we opened this hospital in 2004, we’ve done everything possible to keep our clients’ best interests at the forefront. Introducing telemedicine is just another opportunity for us to uphold that commitment to our community,” says Dr. Hrinivich.
