Cambridge Welcomes Mayor Kathryn McGarry
Cambridge Welcomes Mayor Kathryn McGarry - Doug Craig's Reign Has Come And Gone
After nearly two decades in office Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig will be moving out of his office at city hall.
Mayor Kathryn McGarry will be moving in and promises much needed change which includes public consensus on issues.
McGarry had run for council a number of years back but failed to win her seat. However, there were bigger things in store for her. She became a Liberal MPP for Cambridge under Kathleen Wynne, and eventually held a cabinet position before being defeated this spring in the provincial election.
The defeat came at the right time though. She immediately threw her hat into the mayor's race much to the disappointment of Mayor Doug Craig.
Goes Down Fighting
Doug Craig is no quitter. He went out the way he wanted to...fighting all the way. It may take a while, but the city will look back on Craig's achievements with great appreciation someday. He has left his mark on the city landscape which will serve future generations well. However, sometimes his own vision came first and public consensus got lost in the shuffle. This is one of his character flaws that finally came back to haunt him.
Long-time Cambridge Councillor, Ben Tucci also made a bid for the mayor's chair and ran third in the final vote analysis. He also ran on sweeping changes, and like McGarry, an open door policy.
Cambridge Open To Strong Women
Cambridge is a city open to strong women when considering mayoral candidates. It began with Claudette Millar and followed through with Jane Brewer. Now Kathryn McGarry will get her turn and according to her comments after she was declared the winner, she wants to start right away to implement her platform on some of the toughest issues.
We wish her well.
