Cambridge OPP Reminds Motorists To Obey Construction Area Speed Limits

(CAMBRIDGE, ON) - Cambridge OPP would like to remind motorists the speed limit through the Highway 401 construction zone between Hespeler Road and Highway 8 is posted at 80km/hr. Police are asking motorists to be respectful and adjust their speed accordingly in order to ensure not only their safety and the safety of other motorists but also the well-being of construction personnel, who are diligently working on the highway to make it more user friendly.

Collisions between Hespeler Road and Homer Watson Blvd along Highway 401, which encompasses the construction zone, consistently sees a high percentage of the total collisions for the entire detachment area, nearing one in every four crashes.

Officers are assigned daily activities designed to increase visibility and enforcement efforts through this stretch of highway. In 2016 members of the Cambridge Detachment issued 4,377 charges between Hespeler Road and Homer Watson Blvd, an increase of 53% from the 2,870 charges issued in 2015. As of the end of September 2017, officers had issued 3,286 charges.

Staff Sergeant Mraud, Commander of the Cambridge Detachment stated, "If we all slow down, be aware of our surroundings and leave a safe travelling distance between vehicles, together we can make a difference and contribute to the orderly movement of traffic through this area. After all, road safety is the collective responsibility of all road users, not just the police."

The project, which started in 2015, is expected to run through 2019 and will see that portion of Highway 401 expand from six lanes to ten.
