Last week Toronto NDP MP Olivia Chow renewed her call to mandate side guards on heavy trucks in Canada. In other jurisdictions these side guards have drastically reduced the number of deaths in pedestrains and cyclists from undercarriage deaths. The guards serve to keep people from being dragged under the truck and under the wheels.
Cambridge based Shu-Pak Equipment has said that it will now install the guards on all the new trucks that it manufactures. This is a great move on their part. Guards such as these have been mandatory in many countries in Europe for over 30 years, and Canada is lagging far behind in truck/pedestrian/cyclists safety. Let's hope that we see fewer news stories about injuries and fatalities, and more news stories about companies like Shu-Pak Equipment, taking a responsible corporate approach.
