The Supreme Court of Canada, in a 5 to 4 decision, supported an order made by the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) requiring Via Rail to make renovations to a number of their renaissance trains to accomodate persons with disabilities. The majority of judges held that the CTA acted properly and within their mandate to require the changes that include the widening of doors and aisles and wheelchair tiedowns. It is estimated that the cost of the renovations will exceed $45million. The CTA originally acted on a complaint brought by the Council of Canadians. The Federal Court of Canada had ruled that Via did not have to make the upgrades to the cars. See the news article here
